The following description comes from the back of the Darth Maul action figure (courtesy of Sir Steve's):
Evil personified, Darth Maul has been ordered to destroy Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, jedi assigned to protect Queen Amidala. Darth Maul comes equipped with a Double-Bladed Lightsaber.
While his name is not officially confirmed yet, Darth Maul is featured prominently in the first trailer. Lucasfilm has registered www.darthmaul.com and www.darthmaul.net--both addresses lead you straight to the offical Star Wars site. "Darth Maul" also appears as registered by Lucasfilm in the US Trademark Database.
Proteus: 4/14/98 - There is a rumored scene where Darth Maul talks to Darth Sidious via a holo-transmission. The dish in the middle of the room is the holo-projector, and Darth Maul is represented by an Exar Kun sketch from Tales of the Jedi. Proteus made a representation of the scene, and says that this picture is based on more than just speculation, but we can't confirm or deny that just yet. Hopefully we'll have more details later. Click here to see it.
Unnamed Source: 1/3/98 - Well, we finally got an accurate description of the elusive Darth Maul from one of our spies who saw Ray Park in costume. The description checks out with our other sources. This character will definitely make an interesting baddie!
Ray Park has his face painted black with a red fire pattern on it, small 1" ivory colored horns are protruding from his skull. He wears low cut black boots, black trousers, black gloves and a black robe that he often wears with the hood up. He carries an orange/red double ended lightsabre that can extend one end only if required. He also wears contact lenses that have black pupils with a fire pattern in them, yellow around the pupil spreading out to red flames.
Valorum: Valorum tells us that Darth Maul is the fighting villian of Episode I, and that he takes orders from Darth Sidious via holograph, like Vader was commanded by the Emperor in The Empire Strikes Back. Darth Maul is the guy with the red tatoos, black, horned head, and the double-sided lightsaber.
Jix: Way back in August during his first contact, Jix mentioned a few characters that would be in scenes shot at the Caserta Palace and Darth Maul was one of them.
Delta Source: Delta told us that Ray Park would be playing this character. He told us that the character would be riding a "speeder" and that Darth Maul would be involved in a fight with Qui-Gon Jinn--the scene we saw in the French Premiere pictures:
Matt Hect from Bravo 5 did a really cool Darth Maul pic for us! Here's his description:
"I did the picture of Darth Maul using Adobe Photoshop 4.0. The tatoos, horns, and dark skin is actually drawn over a picture of Tom Cruise! I drew the background, added some lighting effects, added his hood and glowing eyes...and voila'! I based the picture on reports of what he might look like from a bunch of different sources...hope you like it!"
With the aid of the electrobinoculars, Deak watches the running lights of the starship flash on and off. Suddenly, something huge moves in front of his field of view. Before either of the two young boys can react, a large, sinister SITH warrior in black robes and a face mask looms over them. He carries a long lazer- sword which cuts young Deak down before he or his brother are able to raise their weapons. The startled Annikin backs away in horror, then settles down and ignites his lazersword, which creates an eerie red glow. He stumbles over rocks as he attempts to avoid the charging SITH knight. The evil warrior swings his mighty lazersword, but Annikin manages to deflect the intended death- blow.
Finally, Annikin is able to assume a defensive stance, and the two warriors stand, sizing up each other. The black knight is at least seven feet tall, and dwarfs the young JEDI. They stand for a few moments, almost frozen, then in a flurry of blows, lazerswords clash with the sound of electric snapping and popping. Annikin is barely able to hold his own against the experienced knight. Many blows are exchanged before the SITH warrior is able to back Annikin up against a deep crevasse. Annikin stumbles and almost falls over the cliff to his death.
The black knight suddenly senses something behind him and whirls around to face Annikin's father, Kane Starkiller, a Jedi Bendu master. The Sith warrior raises his lazersword, but is cut in two before he can bring it down again. Kane moves to the fallen black knight, and studies him carefully. Annikin, still a little wobbly from the whole experience, attempts to stand. Kane sees his dead son Deak, and goes to him. He lifts him into his arms and begins to weep. Annikin stands bewildered, watching his father cradle his dead brother.
Harry Knowles' Win-Abo: This character, who will be the "baddy" in Episode I, has a flame-red face, a black head with small horns jutting out of it, and wields a double-bladed lightsaber a la Exar Kun:
Corona Coming Attractions: The informant says he was an extra on the set. The "Panaka" character would be Darth Maul--Panaka is a completely different guy from what we understand:
[Maul/Panaka] has a black shaved head with small inch long horns poking through with fiery red tattoo type designs over his face. Panaka is just standing there wearing a large black cloak with a hood so you cant see his face. The rebels turn and run away to the left and Panaka then lifts his hood down, revealing his red contact lensed eyes and horned head. He then proceedes to remove the whole cloak which drops to the floor and he is wearing a simple black suit similar to the one Luke wore in Return of the Jedi. He unhooks his lightsaber handle from his belt which is about a foot long and holds it in front of him. This is the double headed lightsaber and ILM will probably activate it at this point as if he switched it on. He then spins it around him like a martial arts weapon and runs and leaps into the hanger from the doorway, probably to face OB1 as I also watched a lighsabre duel being rehearsed between Panaka, Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson in the Hangar set earlier that day, but they MAY have filmed it against the blue screen so I dont know if the fight between them will actually take place in the Hangar.
Jason Colyer also had a bizarre revelation while getting his daily dose of caffeine and sugar:
This is pretty silly but I thought it was funny...I was kicking back and watching the trailer for the billionth time and having a snack when I realized the design on my cherry coke can looked just like Darth Maul's face. Maybe Lucas was thirsty when he came up with an idea for the look. :) I also found another picture that's interesting... check out the face on the van in the background. I just thought it was funny and wanted to send you these pictures.
Too bad they went with Pepsi, eh? :) Darth Maul would be a cool spokesmodel for the cola wars.

Sith, GrafixGnu, and Malcom C have an interesting theory about Darth Maul. If it ends up being true, it is definitely a spoiler. We must admit, we don't have a clue, though. So highlight to read.
OK, remember that shot of Darth Maul from the figure card? You can view it here. Does that picture look a lot like Ewan McGregor in face paint? These guys think so. Is there a mole between Maul's eyes like Ewan's? Is the facial structure the same? Here's what Sith has to say:
I know you may think it's a little far-fetched. But if Darth Maul is a dark jedi clone of Obi Wan it would set up Ep 2: the clone wars perfectly. It would also explain why the Pepsi can said Obi-Wan was being taunted by Darth Maul, and that it was something personal. Attached is a bit of photoshop trickery (thanks to Malcolm C) who superimposed Ewan/ObiWan on top of Darth Maul. See what you think. Have another look at the original. See how the light reflects down their right cheek? The same. See how both their right eyes is slightly lower than the left? Notice their mouth shapes and upper lips are the same? Notice their noses are similar, eye spacing etc? Maybe this is one of the revelations in EP 1 that Lucas hinted at.
Hmmmm. But isn't Ray Park playing Darth Maul? Well, it's possible that he's only doing the stunts. Who knows. What do you think of this theory? Check out our Jedi Council Forum to discuss.

The following is a possible spoiler if it ends up being true, so highlight to read:
Shawn M. Blake recalled that when Timothy Zahn started writing Heir to the Empire, he actually wanted Joruus C'Boath to be a clone of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Lucasfilm axed the idea. Was it because he wanted to use the idea in the film? Consider this. Marvel Comics at one time wanted to do a story about a second Death Star, but Lucasfilm axed it. Then, lo and behold, it showed up in Return of the Jedi. Hmmmmm. Schwoozer also noted that Ray Park's only other credit at the Internet Movie Database was in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation as...get this..."Rayden's double". Experience as a double, eh?

More commentary on the Darth Maul theory. If it ends up being true, it's a spoiler, so you'll have to highlight it to read it.
Now that we've heard one side of the theory thinking that Darth Maul might be a clone of Obi-Wan, it's time to hear the other side of the argument. Prequel Watch and several others have stated that the packaging we saw for the figures was prototype packaging. We've been able to confirm that the packaging is not a prototype, but rather the real thing. It's what you'll see on the shelves. So the question is whether or not the depiction of Maul was accurate on the cover. One of our informants said the paint marks on the face were accurate, but the facial features are different. They said, "While Darth Maul's face appears thinner and his ears bigger, this could all be a work of makeup artist." Jon Gyngell also noticed the same thing about the Prototype Figures revealed on Prequel Watch a while back.:
I thought I'd try to add a new perspective to this interesting idea. Do you remember the pics of the Kenner prequel toys from a while back, well if you compare the Obi-Wan and Maul figures, it looks like they are in *no way* the same. Totally different face shape, especially the chin. I know sometimes the Kenner figures can be a little inaccurate, but surely something as important as a clone would be seen in the figures too? Also, looking at the differences between the figures made me look again the Darth Maul pic. The chin seems too long to be Ewan's. Plus Ewan has a very large mole on his cheek which is not apparent on Maul (even if it was painted red, you would see the outline. Surely a clone would inherit moles?!). I also tried (*very* roughly) painting the whole of Maul's face red to get rid of the misleading black tatoos. Again, it doesn't look much like Ewan to me. What do you think?
The figures DO look a lot different, don't they? Some of you also recall a post we made a while back about Ewan and Liam Neseson dueling. You wondered if that was the scene between Qui-Gon and Maul. Well, actually, while it could be possible, you'll notice that the Obi-Wan action figure is called "Jedi Duel Obi-Wan". Is there a scene where Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan have a sparring match? Possibly. So, the discussion continues. :)
